In an age where game designers are trying everything to bridge the gap between movies and games, Super Mario Galaxy strips everything away to bring gaming back to what made it fun in the first place. Not about sitting in a movie theater – it’s never been about that. It’s about the basic joy of moving, running, and playing.

With Super Mario Galaxy, Nintendo has taken everything that made the Super Mario Bros series fun and brought it into 3D with greater fidelity than ever before. It might seem complicated at first, but when you look at it from a more basic perspective, you’ll see that this game takes the core concepts of Mario gameplay to their purest form, only this time they’re literally applied to another world – outer space.

Structurally, Super Mario Galaxy is similar to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine before it. Each world is made up of a variety of levels, and each level has its own set of individual objectives. You complete each objective to earn stars, and collect stars to unlock new worlds. The design stays the same because it works, and by keeping the player engaged, it allows the charming platforming to take the spotlight, just as a Mario game should.

Level design takes center stage in Mario Galaxy, and it really does pack a punch. Cosmic Cove Galaxy is magical – the mystical melody of a harp lures you into the water filled with sea creatures and plants. You move from lake to lake by gravity, until you slam the button down and freeze the entire planet. We said it before, this game is awesome and it would be a shame to miss it.
