True Crime: Streets of LA – an open-world action game developed by Luxoflux, published by Activision, and launched on GameCube in November 2003.

True Crime: Streets of LA focuses on the character Nick Kang, an LAPD detective. He is full of funny lines, always gets into trouble, and likes to work alone. If you’ve ever watched any movie or TV show based on the rebel cop model, you’ve seen the character a thousand times.

Nick’s father also worked for the LAPD and passed away 20 years ago. The case was never solved, so we have this game.

The gameplay revolves around the work of a police officer. During story missions, you will do one of four things: drive, shoot, fight, or sneak. It’s all fun and chaotic, depending on how you handle the missions.

True Crime: Streets of LA builds a badge system and a good/lousy police system to evaluate players. Badges are earned by completing objectives and used to redeem failed missions and purchase upgrade courses. You can go to the dojo to learn martial arts, go to the shooting range to improve your reload speed, and participate in races to unlock new vehicles. This is an excellent system because you can unlock upgrades by completing tutorials on using them.

The good/bad cop system is essentially your morality rating. Taking down criminals without killing them or preventing random robberies will increase your rating. Shooting a criminal in the head or running over a civilian will lower your rating. Your rating will unlock free upgrades but, more importantly, affect the plot and how things play out.

Visually, the game looks good. The main characters look great and work very well in the cutscenes.

The developers also take great care of the sound. They bought the rights to many songs by rappers from LA to play on the radio. They also licensed more songs for the action sequences. The game even has its original soundtrack that fits the story.

True Crime: Streets of LA is a game that, if given more time to perfect, could become one of the classic games of this generation. Even so, it’s worth having in your GameCube rom collection.
