Maniac Mansion ROM Description

The Edison estate has long exuded an air of mystery and foreboding, situated on the outskirts of town. Strange experiments and supernatural beings residing in the Edison household have been the subject of much speculation. Legend has it that, about twenty years ago, a meteorite landed close to the house. On a more urgent note, Sandy, a high school student in the area, has vanished, and her boyfriend Dave claims to have witnessed Dr. Fred kidnapping her. Dave is well aware that he will want the assistance of two fellow students if he is to succeed in penetrating the estate and saving Sandy.

To begin, players select two classmates to go with Dave to the Edison estate; they have complete freedom to switch between the three characters whenever they like. The majority of actions may be accomplished by dragging and dropping verbs onto an item, such “OPEN Door” on the screen. The characters all keep their individual identities and sometimes come up with creative solutions to problems that the rest of the class misses. Because of this, several of the puzzles have multiple solutions, one tailored to each playable character. If the Edisons manage to catch any of the children, they will be sent into the dungeon and will have to be rescued by any character who is still free.
