Yakuza Kiwami follows the journey of a powerful man who has lost everything and sees if he can keep that power despite it all. A decade later, he is released from prison and receives a letter explaining that it is time for him to leave. Most of the leaders of his old clan are dead or missing, so he has no choice but to pick up the pieces of his old life. In many ways, the game almost feels like a crazy, dramatic comedy anime. Each chapter is filled with terrible betrayals, incredibly epic fight scenes, and silly moments, like this master of disguise constantly hunting us down to challenge us to a duel.
There is a main goal of rescuing people from complicated troubles and regaining our old jobs in Yakuza. You can stop worrying about that at any time if you want to spend hours on side content. We are set loose in a highly detailed Japanese area. Just walking down the street, your senses will be flooded with flashing signs, street vendors shouting about what they have for sale, and random guys looking for a fight.
Kazuma may have a heart of gold and good intentions, but he never runs away from a fight. It’s hard to say that this game belongs to any genre, although it’s definitely more of a beat ’em up than anything else. There are battles around every corner, so be on the lookout for surprise attacks. I’m not sure how, but our hero knows four completely different martial arts. By pressing the D-pad, you can switch between these four offensive or defensive styles to safely handle each encounter. For example, if you’re cornered by some drunks, you can go into an open stance and try to take them down before they can strike. However, when facing more skilled opponents, you should use something like the Dragon Stamp. You can block better and unleash your own slow and heavy attacks.
Regardless of what martial art you’re using, you can unleash light strikes, heavy strikes, or special attacks. These require the enemy to be in a specific position, like this one where I punched someone lying on the floor for an instant knockout.
Each level you gain actually makes you feel more powerful, which I really like. I think some games have this problem where you can do everything from the start, while that’s not really the case here. Complete missions, progress further into the world, and actually do side quests that make your character a different person than he or she started out with. In this way, Yakuza can be as big or as small as you want it to be.
Yakuza Kiwami first appeared on Nintendo Switch with a remake of the original PS2 version that was released many years ago, and it’s a great addition to your Nintendo Switch games collection. Please download the ROM of the game via the link below.
