Tokyo Xanadu was first released for the PlayStation Vita in Japan in 2015, after which the eX+ version also came to PlayStation 4 with some additional content as well as performance improvements. After nearly 5 years, we now officially have a version for the Nintendo Switch.
Tokyo Xanadu eX+ does not use Falcom’s classic fantasy setting. The game takes place in modern-day Tokyo, specifically in 2015. Kō is a high school student, who is trying to save a classmate he sees getting mugged and ends up diving headfirst into a battle between some Japanese underground groups in another dimension called Eclipse. This actually caused a disaster killing thousands 10 years before the game began.
The story follows Kō as he ventures in after his friends and family become victims of this Eclipse dimension and the monsters lurking within it. He slowly forms a group able to fight back, preventing a second disaster, and the basic storyline just goes from there, leading to them trying to prevent this second disaster from occurring.
Tokyo Xanadu eX+’s gameplay is a combination of different elements, including action RPG and tactics. Falcom fans imagine it like Trails of Cold Steel but with a modern setting and easier-to-approach dungeons, or if it’s easy for you, Persona as an action RPG.
The dungeons make the game engaging and unique. You walk around dungeons, solve some light basic puzzles, and basically hack and slash through enemies with different characters with different weapons and attack types. The combat is simple in that you only have three different attack types. You have melee attacks, ranged attacks, and heavy strikes. But there is a lot of strategy here. Each enemy has elemental weaknesses and every playable character has an element attached to all of their attacks. Exploiting weaknesses causes more damage, and gets you elemental kill bonuses similarly with physical and ranged attacks. Some enemies are immune to ranged attacks so you have to use the physical attacks. Again, you can get kill bonuses. Kill bonuses are very important because when you finish a dungeon, you get ranked all the way up to S. And you want to get the higher rankings for each dungeon you go through not just because you get more link points for having a high score but it also pertains to the endings.
You can trade gems you find in the creature battles for yen and then use that to buy upgrade items or you can even search for recipes to make your own meals then can carry with you into dungeons to function like health with each character having their own specialties and you will learn these things as you go through the game. There is a lot to do and Tokyo Xanadu eX+ will keep you busy in its journeys.
Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is certainly an enjoyable action RPG if you are a Falcom fan. The game has had an excellent port over to the Nintendo Switch system, so it would be a real shame for you to miss out on it.
