Pizza Tower was released on Steam on January 26, 2023 and has received nothing but positive reviews. So when the Nintendo Switch version came out today, I quickly uploaded it and shared it with you for free. The consensus is that the game is a combination of classic platformer gameplay and puzzle solving. It’s like a hybrid of Wario Land 4 and Sonic.

Pizza Tower has a simple but straightforward storyline that gets straight to the point. You play as Pino, the unluckiest pizza chef on the planet. His pizza shop is threatened by the Pizza Tower and at the top of the tower is a giant laser that is about to burn everything in the shop. Your mission is to climb the tower, defeat all the enemies and save your pizza shop. If you act late, your pizza shop will surely turn into ashes.

The gameplay is the focus here and it is the selling point. Pizza Tower is like a classic platformer where the main tower is divided into floors, or worlds as they are traditionally called. Your task is to clear each level and defeat the boss before being allowed to move on to the next level. Keep in mind that each level has a score and a cash reward, and this money is required to unlock the boss fight. If you fail to defeat the boss, you will be stuck on that floor.

Pizza Tower has many similarities with Wario Land in both gameplay and graphic style. Especially the character skill types look really similar, but the character’s movement speed will surprise you. The character skill system is really fun and serves the activities in the game well, including sprinting, wall running, reaching, throwing, mid-air boosting, rolling and more.

The game also impresses with its extremely diverse and reasonable level design. The levels are always changing with special abilities like riding hot dogs to speed up, turning into ghosts, using grappling hooks, etc. These surprises keep you excited throughout the journey. The level setup is also very unique and really impressive. The initial goal is always simple: reach the end of the level, destroy an object and a countdown timer starts. This timer is related to your escape route, and you have to return to the starting point before the time runs out. This mechanic is really tense but is done well with shortcuts that open up, ensuring the gameplay is always fresh. It means you won’t just have to go the same way. You can also pick up timers to extend your time on the way, but be careful because every second that passes will reduce your score.

One of the things Pizza Tower does best is variety. We have the goal of saving pizza toppings from the levels. However, the levels are packed with collectibles, secrets, bonus locations, plenty of reasons to come back after you complete them. The game even has a tower completion percentage counter and detailed achievements for each floor.

Visually, Pizza Tower is truly exceptional. It’s an homage to 90s animation and definitely has a Ren and Stimpy feel to it. The style will definitely be loved by some and hated by others, but what I noticed was the dynamic expressions of each character.

Sound can be a defining factor in a game, and I’d say this is probably my favorite part of Pizza Tower. The soundtrack is as cartoonish as the gameplay, fast, frantic, and sometimes unsettling, especially the theme tune as you try to escape a level. I probably wouldn’t listen to it outside of the game for fear of panic attacks, but when combined with the gameplay, it makes perfect sense. It’s a fantastic, quirky, ever-changing soundtrack that syncs with the levels.

Pizza Tower is one of the best 2D island-hopping games on the Nintendo Switch. It certainly takes cues from its predecessors, but it just takes those elements and applies its own unique personality. The level design is great, the bosses are challenging but fair, escaping the levels is intense, and the art and music are gorgeous. The game is available to download via the link below!
