Persona 5 Tactica for the Nintendo Switch is a streamlined tactical RPG compared to other blockbusters in the same genre, but it delivers a flawless gameplay experience for everyone. The game is just complex enough and just familiar enough for fans of the Persona games.

The story is as delightfully crazy as you’d expect from a Persona game and engaging from start to finish. The cast is fantastic as always, full of familiar characters that Persona fans love. After the events of Persona 5, the members of the Phantom Thieves are trying to enjoy a relaxing summer when they get pulled into another world. They’re not sure if it’s the Metaverse or something completely new, but when they encounter the tyrannical ruler Mario who controls this place, they know they’re in trouble. With the help of new character Arena and her rebel group, they start working to overthrow this powerful enemy and save the world.

The game lets the player control a team of up to three members, including old members of the Phantom Thieves, along with two new characters – politician Toshiro and rebel leader Erina. Each character can, basically, move freely within set movement ranges when their turn comes, attacking enemies with guns or getting close for melee attacks and flushing enemies out of cover. Each character except Arena can equip a Persona, which grants powerful stats and abilities to the wielder.

The player’s guns will have varying levels of effectiveness, depending on how “covered” the enemy is. If the enemy is in “Full Cover”, the player’s ranged attacks will be completely negated, if they’re in “Half Cover” the enemy will take reduced damage, and players can only do full damage with guns by “flanking” the enemy or pushing them out of cover with melee attacks.

Most of the special abilities like area attacks, controlling and quick movement come from leveraging Personas in combat, and with over 100 different Personas to collect from fusion throughout the game, Persona 5 Tactica’s seemingly simple gameplay actually has a lot of depth for players to discover.

In addition to being a great tactics game, Persona 5 Tactics has all the hallmarks of a top-tier Persona game. The slick menus and vibrant imagery, though stylistically different, are a real breath of fresh air and the soundtrack is excellent as well.

Persona 5 Tactics is unlike any tactics game ever released. It constantly introduces new things from start to finish. It has all the style and charm of a mainline Persona game while providing completely unique and addictive gameplay.
