Initially released in 2004, Mario vs Donkey Kong is an exciting spin-off that turns the Donkey Kong series into a whole new puzzle platformer. The game is back on the Nintendo Switch system with a new remake.

Mario vs Donkey Kong has a unique and exciting plot. It opens with Donkey Kong watching television only to quickly become fascinated by an advertisement for Mario Toy Company’s newest product, a small Mario toy. At this point, Mario is an honest toy businessman, perhaps with a not-so-promising plumbing job. Anyway, Donkey Kong rushed to the store, but unfortunately, the toy was sold out. With no other reasonable options left, he broke into the toy factory and stole the remaining toys, causing Mario to chase him.

The game is presented in its original format, where you must play through 6 stages, a mini-stage, and then a boss battle. Levels occur in various rooms where Mario must dodge enemies, cross platforms, and collect items to advance to the next area.

Mario vs Donkey Kong offers a different but adorable Mario-playing experience. The puzzles are also quite simple. Sometimes, you must collect a key to open doors on the other side of the map and avoid various hazards that will progress as you play.

One significant change with this remake is the addition of two new worlds that mess up the original order of the worlds. Mario vs Donkey Kong has a total of over 130 levels to complete. Besides, we have more difficult plus stages of the original, unlocked after you defeat the bosses.

Besides the new levels, there are some improvements to gameplay mechanics and additional content. The new co-op mode allows multiple people to play simultaneously, which is fun.

In terms of presentation, Mario vs Donkey Kong is not a graphically complex game but makes a good impression. Even with simple graphics, the character and terrain rendering methods look great. The shots in the intro scene are some of the best on the console.

Mario vs Donkey Kong is an excellent remake of the legendary original game on GBA. We get drastic graphics and music quality improvements when it’s brought to a modern system like the Nintendo Switch. Also, a lot of new content has to provide a satisfying playing experience.
