Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe ROM Description
Kirby’s Return to Dreamland was released on the Wii in 2011, although in the UK, it was titled Kirby’s Adventure Wii. Following the pink balloon’s 30th anniversary, we have Return to Dream Land Deluxe – a remake of one of Kirby’s best adventures.
The game begins with Kirby and the gang discovering a crashed spaceship piloted by Magolor. Magolor explains that spaceship parts have fallen everywhere, and Kirby agrees to help find those parts and the adventure begins.
Return to Dream Land Deluxe offers standard Kirby gameplay, a 2D platformer where you can run, jump, and suck in enemies to attack or copy their abilities. Pressing the B button allows Kirby to suck up most enemies or blocks, but if he encounters something larger or heavier, he’ll suck harder. After sucking, you can press B to attack or press down to swallow. If Kirby swallows an enemy with special abilities, he will gain those powers such as swords, fire breathing, petrification, etc. The B button controls that ability with different moves depending on the direction of pressing.
You can play 4-player co-op with the characters Meta Knight, King DDD, Waddle Dee, or Kirby. The main goal is to get from A to B, defeating enemies along the way. Each stage has a number of Energy Spheres to collect, usually 3 to 5, scattered around or requiring certain abilities to obtain. For example, water is needed to put out a fire. The game usually provides a way to get the needed ability at the level, but sometimes, it has to fall back on the ready ability.
A key feature is upgraded versions of abilities such as the Ultra Sword, which creates massive attacks that can destroy terrain and obstacles. They have a limited time, and each can open up secret areas. When entering these dark areas, you will have to overcome a series of obstacles with closed walls, ending with a mini-boss battle to receive 2 Energy Spheres.
Energy Spheres are used to unlock challenges and ability rooms in the spaceship hub area. Kirby games have a reputation for being easy, and this one is no different, although the difficulty increases gradually. I can definitely beat the game without any trouble. There is a harder mode, but it only unlocks after completing the game; having it available from the start would have been better. Still, multiplayer was fun, even though we easily beat the boss, thanks to its overwhelming power.
Bosses are also typical of Kirby games, dodging attacks, learning patterns, and then shooting back stars as they are generated. If it is possible to copy, it can be used instead of copy. The game will provide power-up options before fighting the boss.
Overall, you get standard Kirby gameplay with a few interesting twists, fun co-op play, and a good sense of progress as you collect Energy Spheres. This is also a special version that adds a competitive multiplayer game mode.
