Gimmick is an NES game released in 1992. The game was not really popular when it was released and the sales were not impressive. But somehow in 2024, 32 years after the original game was released, we have Gimmick 2. It seems like a miracle because this game is back with a completely new and shiny look.

Once again, you will control Yataro, a cute toy-like creature who is a companion of a little girl. While sleeping next to his adorable little friend one night, an evil witch appears and kidnaps the little girl. This makes you chase the witch through 6 different worlds. This game promises to take you 5-7 hours of play to complete. That depends on how many collectibles you want to find and of course your personal skill level.

At its core, Gimmick 2 is a puzzle-style platformer, but what sets it apart from other titles in the genre is Yataro’s unique ability to summon a star. This star can then be thrown at enemies, bounced off walls, and even ridden. The star is a huge aspect of the gameplay, essential to progression, while the way you use it is quite different.

Your main goal remains the same as any other platformer, you need to traverse the sectioned worlds, defeat bosses, and eventually reunite with the little girl. Gimmick 2 has excellent level design and physics that make the game incredibly fun to play. You’ll throw your star at enemies, navigate dangerous platforming sections, and solve various puzzles that mostly involve using the game’s top-notch physics system.

Gimmick 2 is a fantastic puzzle platformer that took me completely by surprise. We have a well-crafted product with smart level design, physics, beautiful sound, vibrant visuals, and a great soundtrack. All of this makes it one of my best experiences of 2024.
