With indie games, the story is always an important part. The story goes that the famous professor Dr. Gray created many androids, Earth Guardians, that could basically prevent any natural disaster. So far, everything was fine. Unfortunately, they suddenly disappeared and then a large number of robots appeared and started destroying everything. Luckily, Dr. Gray escaped and was able to create one final machine, the perfect Android and humanity’s last Hope, Elsie.
Elsie’s gameplay is a combination of different elements from other games but it still has its own unique and appealing traits. The game is divided into two areas, one for building and one for fighting. You have a hub called Saphirwolf, like a riverside village where you and your team gather. It’s from here that you will undertake all the Rog Litey runs between rounds. What are Rog Litey runs you may ask? You can buy different buildings that add new functions like this lady here, who grants you different spells or another one adds weapons and allows you to customize your gear. Dr. Gray has her own lab that allows you to upgrade with this super currency. They unlock items that you can purchase or find in the world.
Like some other Rogue-lites, to unlock new content, you will have to reach certain level thresholds when you find them. Initially, Elsie is equipped with a rapid-firing pistol. She has the standard dash motion but a few small additional mechanics. There is a fairly unusual parry system, basically, you press L whenever danger is about to happen and it does this on screen. If you press at the right time, i.e. when it turns green, you will counterattack with force and perform a counter. While this is used to reflect damage and push back bullets, you also need to do it to lower enemy shields.
Your dash motion can be used multiple times which is really cool if you rush into a wall you can also shoot enough bullets and then you have to get out of harm’s way. If you mistime it, you can press it again and again. And it can even be very useful to get you out of situations where otherwise you would die.
The maps are randomly generated in some ways, a staple of any Rogue lite game. This is one of those situations where the developers seem to have created some general rooms and layouts, then sprinkled randomization on top so each playthrough feels in a different order and sometimes with unique areas. It’s good, it works well and you can move forwards and backward between rooms even though this isn’t a place you need a map.
Perhaps you just need to go back for a chest you forgot or an item you left on the ground. The combat is actually extremely fast-paced and that’s really the highlight for me. The parry motion takes quite some time to get used to but once acclimated, I realized why it was designed that way because it’s not just a parry but also a way to avoid damage and as mentioned lower enemy shields.
We have the second area which is the HUB, where you’ll fight and complete objectives. Levels work behind the scenes as you damage enemies and defeat them. Occasionally you will level up, pressing minus during this time will open the menu and freeze all processes allowing you to slot one of the options into your character for that run.
In the HUB, you can unlock newer and more diverse ones but leveling is quite fast and you’ll feel yourself getting powerful very quickly. Additionally, killing enemies without taking damage or meeting other prerequisites will drop a small chest in the level you can unlock for extra items. Sometimes you’ll find purple ones and if you have a key, you can unlock them between areas. Sometimes you’ll have a shop but there are also cute little piles called pyres which are actually vending machines where you can replenish energy, skill points, or a portion of your health.
Where the game really reminded me of Dead Cells is how you progress through stages. Once fighting the boss and hopefully defeat them, two gates will open up and you have the choice of the next area to go into. The difference here is that in Dead Cells you can actually find your way through a stage to a different exit but I like this gate system; the two random gates are not always the same.
Elsie is a fantastic game on the Switch that you shouldn’t miss out on. It simply blends good elements from different games to create one of the best you’ve seen. The game costs $20 on the eShop but you can download its NSP file for free here. The game can be installed and run smoothly on an emulator or modded Switch.
