Disney Illusion Island is a typical product of the Metroidvania genre. The game has a beautiful presentation that is perfect for any fan of Disney and its animated films.

Developed by Dlala Studios, the people behind the recently revamped Battletoads, Illusion Island is a great collaboration.

The story opens with the heroes accepting an invitation to go on a picnic. There, they meet Toku, the leader of the Hojuns tribe, who needs help finding the Books of Knowledge. With these books, the Hojuns hoped to prevent disaster. Disney’s cast of characters shines throughout the plot. From the writing, the beautifully animated scenes, and the design, Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy truly feel like they came out of their cartoons.

Despite its similar name to the 1990’s Castle of Illusion, Illusion Island isn’t a platformer but a Metroidvania and is accessible. This is an excellent introduction for those new to the genre or wanting to introduce this traditional genre to friends.

At the beginning of each playthrough, you can play Mickey, Minnie, Donald, or Goofy with up to 4 players. All play similarly and have similar abilities, the only difference being the visuals or effects accompanying the action. Unlockables are scattered relatively consistently, but there are no combat abilities; instead, it’s all just jumping.

As a result, you don’t fight enemies but avoid or avoid them. Throughout the mazes in Illusion Island, you will encounter many animated enemies; just touching them will make you lose your health. The only thing that can be considered combat is the boss battles, where you can hurt or trap the boss with your surroundings.

There’s no actual combat in the game, which makes jumping into the game easier. Each player has the same skill set, making choosing a character easier.

In the world, you will find Glimt. You can collect and use them to unlock concept art, demo music, and even animation clips. Mickey memorabilia are also collectibles that reference other works by Mickey. Although they do not bring value to the game, this is an excellent detail for Disney fans.

Disney Illusion Island feels like it came out of the latest Mickey Mouse animated series, The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse. The humor, animation style, and character design match and look great on Nintendo Switch.

Disney Illusion Island has a beautiful soundtrack composed by David Housden, who worked on Battletoads and Thomas Was Alone. The soundtrack features fantastical orchestral music that brings the animated world to life.
