The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings Miles Edgeworth’s detective spin-off games to modern platforms. While these remasters feature welcome improvements like upgraded HD visuals, switching between the original and new art, and quality of life tweaks, removing the courtroom structure exposes fundamental flaws in the gameplay.

The lack of an overseeing judge lends the arguments and rebuttals less credibility. The suspects themselves decide when you’ve proven them guilty, leading to absurd circular logic and conjecture just to drag things out. Even the lawyers seem more incompetent, making claims that would instantly get thrown out in an actual trial. This causes the mysteries to often feel like they’re treading water.

That said, exploring crime scenes from a top-down view allows for more intricate environments. Edgeworth’s deductions also help players understand details better than Phoenix Wright’s investigations ever did. But the tedious “mind chess” segments in Investigations 2 fly in the face of Ace Attorney’s precision, relying on vague dialogue choices rather than evidence.

While some cases like the airplane murder and theme park death provide clever puzzles, others like the smuggling and corruption capers are disappointingly weak. The lack of courtroom showdowns removes the dramatic climaxes the mainline games excelled at. But watching suspects squirm and eventually crack remains entertaining.

Ultimately, the Investigations games expose the Ace Attorney formula’s reliance on its courtroom structure. Even with improvements, these are still the weaker entries in the series, better suited for fans than newcomers. Their rerelease may provide hope for Phoenix Wright’s eventual return, as only he can match wits with the slipperiest liars. While Edgeworth plays many roles well, Wright remains the attorney best equipped to take on injustice.
