WarioWare Gold is like a compilation of some of the best microgames in the series’ history. This isn’t the first time Nintendo has released a mini-game compilation on 3DS when they tried it with Mario Party: The Top 100 in 2017. The difference here is that WarioWare Gold is actually a great product.

Wario once again tries to trick his friends into making games for him to make money. The usual storyline, but the stories told around it are actually pretty funny—all thanks to the visual gags, great writing, and impressive voice acting. Although the voice cast is excellent, the character who shines is Wario himself. For the first time since Mario Power Tennis, Wario is fully voiced instead of just making noises.

The story is divided into 3 gameplay styles: Mash, Twist, and Touch. Mash just requires using the directional buttons or A button to perform simple commands. Twist requires using the 3DS’s gyro sensors to twist left/right. Touch, as the name suggests, uses the touchscreen. All the microgames play really well, reacting fast, and the updated graphics give them a fresh new look. Even as the games speed up, beating them is very satisfying.

The Series’ Highlight – Nintendo’s New Microgames

The highlight of the series has always been Nintendo’s new microgames, and the ones in Gold are fantastic. Even after completing the story mode, there are still many challenges, like playing with just one life or an extremely hard mode. The craziest challenge is Wario Interferes, where Wario places obstructions on the screen. As you complete the different modes, you earn tokens to unlock capsule toys. Each capsule contains different collectible rewards. These include character cards, music tracks, and unique prizes like an amiibo sketch mode to draw your own amiibo characters or record all the game’s dialogue.

Easy, Fun, and Ideal for Short Bursts

WarioWare Gold is simple, fun, and ideal for short play sessions. This is the best game in the series since the original 15 years ago. It’s the funniest gaming experience, and we recommend that anyone who owns a 3DS or a 3DS emulator try it out right now.
