Chronologically, this game actually takes place alongside Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope, where Plague Knight is played in the background as you see Shovel Knight controlled by the CPU doing his thing in the first game. You’ll understand it more by playing this after finishing Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope, because of the many referential details and subverted expectations in Plague of Shadows once you’re familiar with Shovel of Hope.

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows is not just playing Shovel Knight with a new skin. Plague is a tricky one to control. Even simple jumping now requires finesse and skills never before seen. You have to fling yourself back and forth to conquer every challenge in your way.

Almost every room now is a puzzle to be solved as you try to reach the next area, while also collecting blue coins that can be exchanged for upgrades.

There’s also new story elements to consider. This is not just a knight saving the princess story. Plague has conspired to concoct a potion with which anything could become conquerable. However, each knight holds a key ingredient necessary to complete the formula. So you have motivation to re-explore levels you may have been itching to revisit.
