Deep beneath the ocean’s Sequin Land, an ancient evil power is rising. A cursed pirate lord wants to rise from his grave to enact a bloody revenge. Only Shantae, the guardian genie, has a chance to defeat this monstrous foe. But she needs the help of a new friend and an old enemy if she has any hope of winning.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is a platform action game for the Nintendo 3DS. In the game, you control Shantae, protector of humanity, as she adventures across the land of Sequin. Early on, we learn that dark magic has awakened an immortal pirate warlord, forcing Shantae to join forces with her old nemesis Risky Boots to thwart his plans.

In terms of mechanics, the game is very typical of the platform genre. The world is divided into half a dozen different themed levels, each with their own setting. In each stage, you roam around defeating enemies, collecting pickups. Most of the time you’ll be gathering money to purchase items like potions or damage upgrades. However, you also need to uncover secrets and hard to reach squid hearts. If you collect enough, they allow permanent health increases. Ultimately each level ends with you overcoming a trap-filled dungeon and defeating a boss. After beating the boss, you’re often rewarded with new gear that enables new attack types or movement abilities, allowing you to access places or solve puzzles you previously couldn’t.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse has many great platforming elements like precise controls, varied level design, lots of enemy and gear variety. It’s a fun, lighthearted adventure with a humorous tone. The game is colorful, bubbly, and a great choice if you want to experience a quality platform action game.
