Radiant Historia is a time-travel JRPG first released on the Nintendo DS in 2010 in Japan and in 2011 in the West. The game was developed by Atlus, the father of the two legendary game series Persona and Shin Megami Tensei.

Radiant Historia is considered one of the best RPG games ever produced. However, the complexity of the gameplay kept it from really achieving the popularity it deserved. To this day, the game still attracts a loyal fan base because the depth of gameplay and unique mechanics go far beyond the standards of a typical RPG game.

Seven years after its release, Atlus brings back this great game to the 3DS system with the new name Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology. This is not a remake because, in addition to upgraded 3D graphics, the game brings many changes to improve the original version’s already great gameplay.

A disease known as desertification is ravaging the vainqueur world of Radiant Historia, turning land and even people into sand in an instant. As a result, scarce arable land is a precious commodity in the world of Vainqueur, plunging the neighboring nations of Alistel and Granorg into a protracted war. Before sending you on a reconnaissance mission to gather information about enemy Granorg, Pais gives you an old book. Stocke is skeptical, but Pais insists that it might be useful for the mission and sends you off. During the mission, you realize that the old book is actually the White Chronicle, a magical book that allows the user to jump through time and rewrite history. This is the part where the game really gets interesting.

The gameplay is also very unique, closely integrating plot elements and gameplay mechanics from White Chronicle. Radiant Historia combines a classic turn-based combat system with a grid-based mechanic, such as Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics. Enemies appear on a 3×3 grid, with your team forming a line on the right side of the screen. The closer an enemy is to you on the grid, the more damage they deal; however, they also take more damage. Using some skills, you can push and pull enemies around the grid at will. And if there are multiple enemies on the same hex during your turn and you attack that hex, you’ll hit both enemies for the cost of one turn.

Besides upgrading to sharp 3D graphics, this remake has added many new features and side missions. Altus’s decision to add full-voice acting to the characters was a good one that brought new life to the already well-written dialogue. Each character in the game also has a new portrait. Lastly, we have refined the UI and controls to align with the 3DS system.

The music is really great. The battles in the game are always accompanied by a beautifully written soundtrack by Yoko Shimomura herself, who did the scores for Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy 15. The main battle theme is very easy to listen to. Radiant Historia is full of memorable tunes that perfectly decorate any moment, whether it’s a peaceful village, a fierce battle, or a moment of joy.

Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology is a prime example of a well-crafted JRPG overall. The game has a good story, deep gameplay, lots of unique mechanics, beautiful graphics, and great voice acting. This is definitely a great choice for fans of the JRPG genre, with time travel and political elements.
