Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy ROM Description

Introduction to Professor Layton Series

Professor Layton is a puzzle mystery game series. It was first released in North America in 2008. After the first game’s success, we got some great prequel sequels.

In the Layton timeline, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is the final part of the prequel trilogy. You don’t need to know the events from the previous two parts since they have no relevance to this game’s story. Professor Layton receives a letter, so it’s time for a new adventure!

The story starts with Luke and Emmy, the Professor’s assistants, coming to see Professor Layton after getting his message. They find out Professor Sycamore has discovered a girl surviving for thousands of years. The group goes to a town called Stansbury to investigate. There, they meet a girl mistaken for a mummy. When trying to talk to the girl, the group gets surrounded by a group of bad guys. These work for an organization called Targent and kidnap the girl. Professor Layton and his companions try to rescue her.

Gameplay Focused on Puzzles

Professor Layton is a puzzle game series, meaning it’s focused on solving puzzles. In Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, most puzzles take the form of interactive mini-games. You can play around to understand the puzzle, and there’s usually an undo button. All puzzles are played only on the touch screen, and most of the action happens on the lower screen. Some puzzles are extremely hard, so you’ll need the integrated notepad and may have to buy hints.

In total, there are 150 puzzles found in the world, quite a lot, but they are really fun. There are even some unlockable super hard puzzles in the Bonus menu that are accessible after meeting certain conditions, like solving all minigames.

An Open World Structure

One big change in Azran Legacy is how the world opens up after a few chapters. You gain access to the airship Bostonius and can freely search for the Azran Eggs in any order you prefer.

Each Egg is found in a specific area, where you have to solve the locals’ problems to convince them to give you the egg. You know, those have been central to their traditions for millions of years, and they won’t just hand them to you easily.

Beautiful Animations and Art Style

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy has gorgeous animations. The character motions are perfectly smooth. You barely see any pixels on the Nintendo 3DS. But the part that makes the game amazing is the hand-drawn background art that looks truly impressive. It creates the signature style for this game series.

A Fitting End to the Series

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is a worthy and fulfilling ending part of this game series. The time travel story is quite engaging, immersing players in the puzzles. The game looks beautiful with the Ghibli-esque backgrounds and Layton’s signature quirky characters. And most importantly, the puzzles are extremely fun.
