Every once in a while, a game comes along that reminds you of days gone by, the golden age of video games – garish graphics, bright colors, tight controls, peppy music, bubbly and fluid animations – all packaged together extremely neatly and polished. Mutant Mudds for the Nintendo 3DS is a platform action game that combines all of the above elements.

Plot

In the game, you take control of Max, a brash young boy who is more than keen on his job. That is until a meteorite crashes nearby, causing a horde of muddy mutant creatures to appear. You’ll traverse through 8 of the finest-crafted game worlds, including lush greenery, icy tundras, and volcanic regions, with just your trusty water pistol. Each of the game’s 60 levels contains diamonds that need collecting to upgrade your items and abilities. This allows you to access areas previously unreachable. Although this mechanic isn’t as deep as Metroid or Castlevania handhelds, it does add an addictive element to the game.

Challenging Extra Granny Levels

Complete the main game and don’t find it challenging enough? Try out the additional granny bonus levels that are unlocked afterward. They will surely test your platforming skills.

Precise Controls and Platforming

The game demands precise timing as you move across platforms. If you run out of jetpack juice before reaching a platform, or you get trapped as appearing and disappearing platforms, that’s your fault. You never feel the controls are at fault, and for a 3DS outing, that’s high praise. The game does have checkpoints, usually halfway through each stage, but you can turn these off for added challenges.

Depth of Field Adds Puzzle Aspect

What sets Mutant Mudds apart from other platform action games, besides the excellent gameplay, is its clever use of depth of field. The game actually plays out over three planes – the plane the character starts on, one in the background, and one in the foreground. The character can jump between these planes at designated points, and the player decides when best to switch. Most of the time, plane-shifting is one way, which turns the levels into a type of puzzle. You also have to be careful when collecting all diamonds before shifting planes. It’s easy to miss a few and be unable to return, meaning replaying that level if you want 100% completion.

Excellent Retro Visuals and Music

The folks at Renegade Kid have done stellar work and should be proud of their creation. They’ve achieved a level of polish rarely seen in the platform action genre. The excellent chiptune retro music will stay in your head long after playing. This is certainly one of the finest games on the Nintendo 3DS that you shouldn’t miss out on.
