Kirby: Planet Robobot ROM Description

What are Japan’s two greatest cultural loves? One is giant mechs like Gundam; the other is adorable mascots like Pikachu.

Well, HAL Laboratory decided to combine these two extremely popular ideas in a unique 3DS game from the Kirby franchise – Kirby: Planet Robobot.

Kirby: Planet Robobot has a simple plot, like any Kirby game. One day, on planet Popstar, a group of robots called Haltmann Works invaded the planet. King Dedede and Meta Knight see the invasion and attack, but the invader instead takes King Dedede’s castle and Meta Knight’s ship. At this time, Kirby wakes up from his sleep and sees the invasion taking place; now, the duty to save his home falls on Kirby’s shoulders.

The gameplay in Kirby: Planet Robobot is very similar to Kirby: Triple Deluxe. It brings back the gameplay feel of Kirby’s Return to Dream Land with many of the 3D foreground and background elements of Triple Deluxe. Kirby has a total of 27 different copy abilities in this game, some returning from Triple Deluxe and some from previous Kirby games. Among those 27 powers, there are 3 completely new powers: Doctor, ESP, and Poison.

The biggest new addition to the gameplay is the new mechanical armor that Kirby can wear. Scattered across each level are invader robot suits that Kirby can steal and use. This makes Kirby extremely powerful, making it easier to destroy enemies. However, it also introduces new-level designs and puzzles for you to solve.

During story mode, you can collect stickers and data blocks. Stickers can be used to customize the appearance of the mecha suit, while data cubes unlock the final boss battle for each part of the game. Collecting data blocks to progress the plot is an incentive to go back and replay some old levels with some new copy abilities, trying to find hidden data blocks in each level.

There are 6 parts in total; each part has 5 stages and a final boss battle. Each part of the planet has its own theme; for example, some may be underwater while others look like a busy city. Regardless, all of Planet Robobot’s levels feel alive. There is never a boring moment on the level; there is always an enemy on screen or at least something going on in the background.

In addition to the story mode, there are also a few mini-game modes for you to try. One of them is the Boss Rush mode called The Arena. Another game mode is Kirby 3D Rumble which acts as a Time Trial mode where Kirby must face a number of enemies in a 3D space with a time limit. Then there’s the other Teams Kirby Clash game mode that lets you team up with AI or friends to fight bigger boss battles in the form of RPG-like turn-based battles. These game modes are great for a short time but definitely don’t compare to the story mode.

Kirby: Planet Robobot is one of the best games ever released on the 3DS. It’s a relaxing and fun adventure platformer with new gameplay features that breathe new life into the already great Kirby franchise.
