Kid Icarus: Uprising ROM Description
For a franchise that debuted alongside Mario, Zelda and Metroid, Kid Icarus has never achieved the same level of mainstream success, but fans have eagerly awaited the return of the Angelic Hero for the past decade. Now, he’s making his comeback in 3D space with Kid Icarus: Uprising – an adventurous shooter hybrid that pits Pit and his friends against evil. It was truly worth the wait.
An Epic Story 25 Years in the Making
Taking place 25 years after the original NES game, Pit is called upon by Palutena, the Goddess of Light, to once again face off against his old nemesis Medusa and her Underworld Army. The story has its fair share of twists, some more sensible than others, but they all bring unpredictability to the game – you’ll never be able to guess where it goes next. The narrative is supported by impressive scripting and music, as well as gorgeous visuals.
Diverse Gameplay Across Flight, Ground, and Boss Battles
The game’s expansive collection of levels is divided into 3 sections: flight, ground combat and bosses. Nearly every stage starts with the flying segment – this is Uprising’s strongest element. The on-rails horizontal scrolling evokes fond memories of games like Star Fox and Panzer Dragoon as you maneuver Pit around the screen with the analog stick while aiming and shooting with the touch screen. The controls work well with the attention required for combat, and the arcade-style 5-minute bursts add to the replayability.
The boss battles are exciting and varied and work even better with the controls, thanks to many fights taking place in large circular arenas. The boss battles also benefit from the stellar scripting, highlighted by witty banter and personality throughout. Many times, we barely squeaked out a win in an intense boss fight but wished it lasted longer just to hear Pit’s hilarious exchanges with the villain.
Post-Campaign Modes Add Depth and Replay Value
Once the campaign is over, Uprising has numerous modes, minigames and online multiplayer to keep you coming back. You also discover real depth in the combat system as you continuously seek out the perfect weapons to match your playstyle. Even after the 12-hour campaign, you’ll find countless reasons to keep playing. Our experience with Kid Icarus: Uprising ranks among the best we’ve had on a Nintendo handheld 3D. Even with its limited controls, it rarely detracts from this extremely polished experience. Like Metroid Prime and Super Mario 64, Uprising revives this Nintendo franchise in near-perfect fashion.
