Fire Emblem Fates: Special Edition ROM Description
This special edition bundle contains:
- Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright
- Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest
- Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation
3 years after Awakening in 2012, the Fire Emblem series returned to the Nintendo 3DS with Fire Emblem Fates. Fire Emblem Fates is a package of three games corresponding to 3 different versions: Conquest, Birthright and Revelation. If you are familiar with the Pokémon series, you will immediately recognize Fates’ decision to split its story across three different versions. However, the similarities stop there.
Vastly Different Experiences Between Versions
The big difference is that although Fire Emblem Fates: Special Edition offers three different versions of the same game, we get significantly different storylines, gameplay, and even character interactions across them. And no matter which version you choose, you won’t regret it.
Nuanced Storytelling Defines the Experience
The overarching story across the three versions revolves around an ongoing power struggle between the kingdoms of Nohr and Hoshido. You have to decide which side to take in this conflict, or stand apart from it all and forge your own path. Depending on your choices throughout this process, the game starts playing out in different ways.
In the Conquest path, siding with Nohr provides a darker storyline as you choose to fight against your own blood siblings and homeland. You will have to battle against your own flesh and blood.
In the Birthright path, deciding to fight with Hoshido provides a lighter storyline as you choose to fight alongside your true siblings against the family you grew up with.
The Revelation version of the game allows the player to choose neither side and instead motivates them to unite against what the Avatar believes to be the true cause behind the war.
No matter which path you take, there is no right or wrong feeling, largely thanks to the game’s fantastic storytelling, which remains strong regardless of which version you choose.
Refined Gameplay for Veterans and Beginners Alike
If you’re familiar with the Fire Emblem series, then the tactical combat will be almost second nature to you, especially if you’ve played Awakening since the gameplay is very similar. New additions to the combat include new weapons like katanas, naginatas, shurikens, and batons, as well as some new classes like songstress, wolfskin, darkblood, master ninja, etc. The new classes and weapons fit neatly into the game mechanics.
Stunning Visuals and Presentation
In terms of presentation and production quality, Fire Emblem Fates is truly top-notch on the 3DS. While the overhead battle screen is rather simplistic, everything else from the small battle cutscenes on the battlefield to the fully animated CG cinematics in some chapters is absolutely gorgeous.
There is a ton to see and do outside of battling from chapter to chapter, all accessible through My Castle. My Castle is similar in functionality to Awakening’s overworld map and works much better. In My Castle, the player can interact with other characters in their party, participate in lottery drawings for items, and even challenge other players online in Castle Battles.
Flexible Difficulty for Both Experts and Novices
Fates also supports amiibo. Robin, Marth, Ike, and Lucina can appear in Fates by scanning any of their respective amiibo figures. When scanning them in, the player can receive special items as well as recruit them for use as part of their army. Of course, this functionality will be disabled if you play on an emulator.
Music is an area where the game completely excels. The game features a gorgeous soundtrack that conveys everything from soft piano ballads to high tension battle themes. “Lost in thoughts all alone” is Fates’ main theme, played throughout in many different variations, and it’s a beautiful composition. The music conveys so much about the game and events from start to finish.
Conclusion
Initially, Fire Emblem Fates: Special Edition seemed like a scam when it was packaged as 3 versions in one. At its core there are three different versions of the same game, all revolving around the same story. However, what makes this work is that they are all full games, each with distinct events, experiences, and gameplay separating it from the other versions.
