Cave Story 3D was created in 2004 by an independent programmer. He did everything himself. The game took 5 years to complete and was then released for the Nintendo 3DS.

The impression of Cave Story 3D comes from its difficulty level. It is certainly a challenging platformer game. Initially, you play as a young boy entering a cave and discovering an evil doctor trying to take over the island by distributing red flowers to the inhabitants, making them follow his evil bidding. The basic storyline is to go defeat the bosses on the island and rescue the local inhabitants.

Cave Story 3D has quite intuitive and accessible gameplay mechanics. The standard gameplay involves jumping over enemies and moving left to right. An interesting point is the game lets you choose a starting weapon that will stay with you until completion. Of course you can choose other weapons to find one suiting your play style, but it will reset all progress.

Each time you kill enemies with a weapon, they will drop ammo, health or experience points. Collect them to upgrade the weapon. There are 3 levels for each weapon. The annoying thing is each time you get hit, the weapon will lose a level and you take damage. That’s part of the challenge.

The whole game is awesome. Regarding difficulty, it starts simple, you may be confused at times about where to go. But when playing, it is very fun and has tons to explore. The difficulty curve is perfect. Easy at first, increasingly harder, and very hard in the end. Defeating the bosses is always the toughest challenge but reaching them is not easy either.
