Animal Crossing: New Leaf ROM Description
Animal Crossing: New Leaf is fundamentally about virtual life, social interaction, fashion, home decoration, collecting fossils for the museum, and yes, crippling debt. Simple daily activities like shaking trees, greeting neighbors, and shopping or fishing are combined with random surprises and town growth after 1-2 hours of play. You may run out of things to do, but each day brings something new. The time and calendar in the game world reflect real time, dictating everything from daily changes in shop inventory to seasonal bug shifts and special events like Halloween being scheduled. You’ll be asked to make appointments with villagers ahead of time and often results of accomplishments are delayed until the next day. There are also slight daily surprises that might see wandering visitor appearances with rare goods. You can always count on Joan selling you turnips on Sunday mornings, but never know when Gulliver will wash up on shore or Redd will set up a black market at 10:00. All the above is true of any game in the series, but New Leaf allows you more freedom and creativity. You get to decide which town layout you like before arriving. Once finding a place to settle, you can build your house almost anywhere you like and no longer have to endure Tom Nook’s part time job. There is a wider range of villager interaction, more options when designing custom fashions, and you can even customize the exterior of your home. Aside from a secondhand store where you can quickly bag and sell new harvests, most businesses will be located north of the main railway. It’s here you’ll find essential locations like the museum, milk store, and Able Sisters clothing shop. As you invest in these businesses, construction will bring new additions like the garden store, shoe shop, and Club LOL where you can watch KK Slider performances.
Due to a fortunate mix-up when you arrive, you’ve also just become mayor of this little town, allowing you more control over the town’s development than ever before. There are two main mayoral task branches: ordinances and Public Works. Ordinances basically allow you to choose between different town styles, making it easy to maintain a natural beauty or change business hours to suit your personal schedule. Public Works is constructing buildings to improve your town. You can install small items like benches and streetlights, build extra bridges to cross rivers, or fund the Reset Center to ensure Mr. Resetti keeps his job. Like home expansions, each of these projects requires a hefty sum of bells to accomplish. Anyone can contribute and you even get a little from your neighbors, but the bulk has to come from you. The easiest way to make bells is taking the train to a brand new tropical island. Veteran players will get addicted to this permanent vacation spot as it holds a bountiful trove of rare bugs and fish. It’s also where you’ll get a wetsuit that allows you to swim out to sea and dive down to the ocean floor for crustaceans, mollusks, and bottom dwelling sea creatures, opening up a whole new animal world to explore. The island also hosts mini games that let you play alone or with friends such as bug catching or memory games. Participating in these games is worth it as the prize medals earned from these contests are the only currency accepted at the island’s souvenir shop.
Like previous versions, connecting with other players locally or online gives you a chance to visit other towns, where you can browse shops for unfamiliar items, harvest fruits not grown in your town, and simply kick back and see what friends have done. You can now even register real life players as best friends, allowing you to chat online even when not in the same town. A new element to online play is the Dream Suite, where you can browse dream versions of towns other players have uploaded, letting you share your town with strangers without fear of them chopping down trees. The experience is slightly surreal and only satisfies your curiosity since shops are closed and you can’t take items back. Custom designs made by other players are the only souvenirs you can bring home.
Animal Crossing’s relaxed pace and appointment-based schedule is very suited for mobile play and you can easily accomplish tasks on a lunch break or commute. New Leaf also makes the most of all the 3DS features. The 3D works great with the rotating world and helps easily spot bugs. StreetPass populates the Happy Home Showcase, allowing you to view other players’ homes and place furniture to complete your catalog. Finally, Play Coins can be used to purchase fortune cookies that bring rare Nintendo goodies like different pants or a mask that looks like Fi from Skyward Sword. While each new game feature is meant to provide delightful surprises, the necessary asset accumulation can get a bit tedious if you just want to keep progressing. Moreover, conditions to unlock features like the Dream Suite are so cryptic it’s nearly impossible not to rely on a guide, and some gifts feel overly sparse. You may not get to see K.K. Slider perform until nearly a month after you start playing. Still, despite the daily chores and bee stings, there’s something truly charming about this virtual life and you’ll get attached to the endearing characters as you chat and exchange letters. For longtime fans there are many familiar elements but countless refinements and additions in Animal Crossing: New Leaf that breeze through your town like a cool wind. It really is great being mayor.
