King’s Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder! ROM Description

King Graham of Daventry walks in his castle’s woodlands on a lovely day. He is horrified to see Daventry Castle gone when he returns! Graham is confused and wonders how Cedric, a talking owl, appeared. He says he saw everything and that Mordack, a wicked wizard, took the castle and Graham’s family. Cedric proposes taking him to Serenia, where his master, the magician Crispin, lives. Surely Crispin can assist King Graham free his family from Mordack.

KQV: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder is Sierra’s first point-and-click adventure game. King’s Quest V streamlines all game activities to base instructions instead of inputting keyboard commands and using arrow keys to move. The mouse may be moved to the top of the screen to show a secret menu with all the cursors, game options, and the inventory bag. Graham will walk as near as can to the target by clicking the “Walk” cursor. Clicking “Eye” on things provides a description, like entering “Look at”. The “Hand” cursor pushes, pulls, interacts, and picks up items. In King’s Quest’s odd world, the “Head” cursor talks to people, objects, and animals. Players can switch cursors by right-clicking. Graham bags his inventory. Clicking the bag opens a sub-window with Graham’s inventory. Players may gaze at, interact with, or pick up things to use as cursors in the game.

Like other Sierra games, death is possible. Graham will die from witches, venomous scorpions, tumbling off cliffs, thirsting in the desert, and many more things, places, and people. Players must be careful when exploring Serenia; frequent game saves across many files is necessary to avoid getting stranded or starting again.
