F-Zero is a futuristic racing game developed by Nintendo.

Gameplay

So what’s it like to play? Well, F-Zero is a fast-paced racing game where you have to meet certain conditions to progress to the next race. If you succeed, you’ll proceed to the next race in a Grand Prix. Fail, and you’ve got to do it again. You can also use practice mode to hone your skills, but most of the action revolves around the Knight, Queen, and King Grand Prix championships.

You can select from different ships and select the class, and that’s pretty much it. It’s fast-paced, smooth, and colorful, and there’s plenty of high-octane racing to be had. The handling is slick, and the track design is okay. I would say it’s probably not as good as it could have been.

Visuals and Audio

Visually, it’s colorful, bright, and sci-fi themed with over-the-top tracks to fly around. The sound is solid, but perhaps, I would say it’s not up to the very high Nintendo standards that we would have expected in the same era.

Good and Bad

• The good points: the races are fast-paced and exciting, with lead changes all the time; the track variety is good, and it’s very satisfying when you hit a hot lap.
• Bad points: the position constraints take some of the joy away from racing; handling-wise, it is not the best; track design is a little bit underwhelming; and the audio is not so great.

Verdict

F-Zero is a fast, fun, and addictive racing game that’s easy to pick up and play but difficult to put down. It’s not the best example of Nintendo in terms of high-quality game design, but it’s still reasonably good. It may not live up to the other games that came later in the series or the vastly superior Wipeout games, but it’s still worth a go if you’ve never tried it.
