Twisted Metal: Black was released in 2001 on Play Station 2, long after vehicular combat games were starting to go a bit stale. However, it masterfully revived the series. The best part is that the aesthetic and atmosphere have become very strong dark colors. Besides that, the graphics, music, and character designs all carry a very deep and dark edge, truly making the series more mature than the rest.
In Twisted Metal: Black, eccentric heroes like Sweet Tooth become crazier and more unstable than ever. The cartoonish style from previous versions has been replaced with some real seriousness. So this dark style works great for this game but it’s the gameplay here that really heats up the engine. The setting is similar to the previous games with your character at the wheel of his crazy and unique car. You will engage in vehicular combat in the arena where you will rush, pick up weapon boosters, and then destroy your competitors. As usual, the battles in Twisted Metal Black are crazy fast and furious. The frame rate works admirably even when using split-screen multiplayer, and the controls are tight and responsive once you get used to them.
There are tons of explosive weapons to pick up and some special moves unique to each vehicle are awesome. I really like Brimstone’s move, where you launch one of your fanatics coated in explosives at the enemy. And Sweet Tooth’s new move even involves turning into a silly clown robot. Isn’t it great?
Besides the great gameplay is a huge amount of content. There are additional vehicles and stages to unlock and several game modes including a single-player story mode, challenge and endurance modes, two-player cooperative mode, and mortal battles from 2 to 4 players.
If you’re looking for some quality vehicular combat action to play on your PS2 emulator, look no further as Twisted Metal Black is the perfect choice. It’s imbued with atmosphere, dark humor, and most importantly, it’s fun. Download its ISO ROM file via the link below and enjoy!
