Mario Kart 64 was released in North America on February 10, 1997, for the Nintendo 64 system. It is the second installment in the Mario Kart series, following the huge success of Super Mario Kart on the SNES.

Mario Kart 64 is more of a party game than an arcade racing game. You will choose racers from a list of familiar characters from the Mario series. It supports up to 4 local players for custom races. The game looks great in single-player mode, but it’s even great in multiplayer mode.

When you open the game, you are greeted by Mario on the title screen and have the option between one, two, three, or four-player modes. You can choose between Grand Prix and Time Trials by kicking things off with the single-player mode. These modes are essentially identical in this game and in every other Mario Kart game. Grand Prix allows you to choose a cup and race on four different tracks of that cup, with your aim being to aim for the highest possible position at the end. Time Trials involve you trying to achieve the best time on a specific track without being interrupted by other racers or items.

The racing tracks in MK64 are quite diverse, with many different types of terrain. The game has a similar style to Super Mario Kart with power-ups and racing backgrounds, but with Nintendo 64 technology, the game environment was converted to 3D. It adds depth to the structures, stands, and tracks, creating a really good gaming feel.

Each track is filled with obstacles such as bombs, animals, barriers, and even seashells thrown by the characters. Bright spherical item boxes are scattered throughout, containing tires, bananas, boost mushrooms, and stars.

Mario Kart 64 is basically Super Mario Kart remade in a 3D environment. It doesn’t have any innovation in terms of gameplay, but the graphics upgrade is definitely all you want. The game sold nearly 10 million copies, becoming the 2nd best-selling game on N64. Now you can play it on PC or Mobile on a Nintendo 64 emulator.
