Pokemon Red Version ROM Description
Over 15 years ago, Nintendo and Game Freak released Pokemon Red and Green in Japan for the original Nintendo Gameboy. It’s worth noting that in 1996, the console was already at the end of its lifecycle at over 7 years old. However, no one, especially developer Game Freak and Nintendo themselves, could have imagined the impact that these simple games would actually have. Pokemon Red and Blue took the world by storm in the late 90s and set the stage for one of the most successful game series of all time. They certainly weren’t the most graphically beautiful games, even by Gameboy standards, but the gameplay was so great, paired with impeccable music, that players didn’t care about the graphics.
In true RPG tradition, you embark on a long journey to become the best Pokemon trainer in the world. To do so, you must start small with the basic Pokemon. Your mission is to collect new pokemon, level them up by battling other trainers, defeat the 8 Gem Wise Men of the Kanto region, and ultimately defeat the Elite Four to become the best trainer. The real strength of the game lies in its huge amount of play and replayability that no other game at that time had.
Pokemon Red Version has a total of 151 Pokemon from generation 1 for you to catch and fill your PokeDex. The deep and engaging storyline is what makes the game perfect. The game allows you to battle and trade Pokemon with friends. Pokemon Red introduces the vast Kanto with many areas to explore. You will have plenty of opportunities to upgrade your Pokemon and battle other trainers to become the champion.
While the game’s graphics are certainly nothing impressive for a game released in the late 90s, the highlight is still the excellent music. The original Gameboy sound engine was at full blast when playing Red and Blue. It really is a testament to the great work the composers did. Who can forget the music that plays when you finally complete a journey, only to be outpaced by a certain rival character?
What really brings the game to life is the ability to trade and battle. While the Link Cable port on the Gameboy had been used in the past, Pokemon Red really took the experience to the next level by allowing you to not only battle your friends fairly, but also trade Pokemon. This was unique at the time and allowed you to swap Pokemon with friends, helping to strengthen your team and complete your Pokedex.
The battle system in Pokemon Red Version is easy to grasp at a basic level but is deep and satisfying if you really want to dig deeper. When you encounter a wild Pokemon or another trainer, the game switches to turn-based battle mode. Your Pokemon can use one of four available moves that they learn as they level up, allowing you to fully customize their abilities for offense, defense, or support. All Pokemon have weaknesses. For example, it might not be a good idea to use the grass Pokemon Venusaur against the fire Pokemon Charizard. However, that doesn’t mean the water Pokemon Magikarp will have an advantage against Charizard. Regardless of the attribute advantage, everything depends on the level of your Pokemon and how you control it in battle.
Pokemon Red Version, along with the Blue version, launched a huge franchise of games, movies, TV shows, and toys that continues to this day. Pokemon became the best-selling franchise of all time, generating billions of dollars in revenue and making Nintendo the dominant player in the gaming industry for years. If you haven’t played the original version on GameBoy, you should definitely download the Pokemon Red Version ROM right now to experience one of the best games of all time.
