Phantasy Star Online ROM Description

Fantasy Star Online was initially released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000. It is a role-playing game developed by Sonic Team. Fantasy Star was the first online role-playing game for consoles, with players teaming up with up to three others online to complete quests. There was also a couch co-op mode.

Gameplay

First, you had to create a unique character, and the game offered you some excellent options. Then, it’s off to the city hub to purchase items or choose a quest. Once selected, it’s off to the game world with small, focused areas broken down into these tiny little room zones. Enter the room, kill the enemies, Hoover up the loot, search for a box, blah blah blah, repeat that process until the quest is complete or you’re dead. And that was pretty much how the game went from top to bottom.

The quests varied slightly, but usually, they were “go somewhere, find something or someone, do something for them,” etc. Despite that sounding relatively simple, remarkably, they never got tiring.

You know, you would find new weapons for your loadout, new armor pieces, a shield, and mags, like these drone-type characters accompanying you. And as I said, that couch co-op mode was a staple back in the day, making playing this a lot less tedious.

Visuals and Audio

Graphically, I loved the futuristic sci-fi style and the arcade game color palette, and it was very much a sort of Sega-type visual experience.

Again, soundwise, it was an enchanting and unforgettable soundtrack that took me back to my youth – another legendary Sega soundtrack.

Verdict

Fantasy Star Online was the first in console games – a role-playing game you can play online with your mates. It was a memorable game that led the way, as nowadays just can’t avoid this genre.

Fantasy Star Online was a trailblazer for the future of online role-playing games. If you can get hold of it, or a copy of the Dreamcast, or however you want to play it, you know it’s worth a look.
